Baggage

June 29, 2018

The problem with planning for these rides is that you have to be ready for anything nature can throw at you. There will be beastly hot days and cold and wet days. Today was another one of those. We woke up in West Yellowstone in the low 40’s. Rain and wind were in the forecast, but we did not expect the hail that we had to ride through. At least this time I dressed more warmly and was more or less comfortable except for numb hands and feet.

With limited space, there is only so much room for gear. You try to be prepared but there is always something more you would like to have along. This got me thinking about baggage. Not the kind we take on these trips but the kind we all carry around with us every day. Emotional baggage, physical baggage from past injuries or too much fast food, mental baggage from trying to do too many things at once. When there is too much baggage, energy is wasted carrying it around, energy that could be used for more positive things like simply being present for those most important people in our lives. Too often we have so much “stuff ” to take care of and maintain and insure and store that our “stuff” starts to own us. I am not against having toys ( I am plenty guilty of this ) but there has to be a comfortable balance so there is time to enjoy our limited time together.

A trip like this gives one time to reflect on what is really important, forcing yourself to pare down to the bare essentials enables you to free up all kinds of energy. I happen to be using it to ride a bike. What would you use yours for? Make a choice… just set down those extra bags, make a decision to heal those emotional scars and grudges, do whatever it takes to become more free. These are investments that have a guaranteed return.

Spend your life wisely!
